P.I.U. the inclusion walk: an event to break down barriers, visible and invisible
Next 9 May at 17:00Rome's EUR district will host the Universal Inclusive Walk (PIU)promoted by Disability Pride Italy in collaboration with the IX Municipality. A valuable and participative event to reaffirm that accessibility is a universal rightnot a privilege for the few.
We will walk togethersymbolically but also very concretely, to make visible what too often remains invisible: the daily difficulties of those who live, move and explore the world with a disability.
The PIU route: from EUR Palasport to Piazza Marconi
Departure is set at 17:00, at the metro stop EUR Palasportnext to the bar Belvedere. From there, we will walk together Avenue America, Beethoven Street e Liszt Streetup to Piazza Guglielmo Marconiin front of the majestic Obelisk.
A simple path that, for some, can become an obstacle course. And it is precisely this that PIU invites us to discover.
A transformative experience: putting yourself in the shoes of others
During the PIU, those who wish can try their hand at sensory and motor simulationswheelchairs, blindfolds, white canes, earplugs. Small gestures to experience, at least for a moment, what it means to face architectural barriers, inattention, communication difficulties. Because empathy is born from the simplest gesture: listening, looking, walking alongside those who face invisible challenges every day.
Awakening collective awareness with the Universal Inclusive Walk
In a fast-paced world, those who do not live with a disability on a daily basis can easily forget how difficult it is to even step onto a pavement, cross a street, visit a museum or access a public toilet. This is why events like PIU are essentialbecause they help us open our eyes, our hearts and above all our minds.
It is not enough to build ramps or stair lifts: a cultural change is needededucation in respect, diversity, coexistence. Because a truly inclusive city is one in which everyone can choose how and where to move, with full autonomy and dignity.
